Information we collect automatically

Like most websites, this site’s hosting provider automatically logs basic technical information when you visit, such as browser type, device type, and IP address. This is standard server activity used to keep the site running securely, and it is not used to personally identify you.

Fonts and external resources

Some text on this site may be displayed using Google Fonts, loaded from Google’s servers. Loading a font this way can share your IP address with Google, the same way visiting almost any modern website does. This site does not control how Google handles that data; Google’s own privacy policy covers it.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on this site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string, to help with spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to check if you use it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available at https://automattic.com/privacy/. Once a comment is approved, your profile picture is visible publicly alongside it.

Media

If you upload images to this website, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors can download and extract any location data from images on the site.

Cookies

If you leave a comment, you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in a cookie, purely for your convenience on a future comment. These cookies last one year.

Visiting the login page sets a temporary cookie to check whether your browser accepts cookies. It contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

Logging in sets several cookies to save your login information and display choices. Login cookies last two days, screen-option cookies last a year. Choosing “Remember Me” extends your login for two weeks. Logging out removes the login cookies.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (for example, videos or images from elsewhere). Embedded content from other websites behaves exactly as if you had visited that other website directly, and it may collect data about you, use cookies, and monitor your interaction with it, the same way visiting that site normally would.

Who we share your data with

We do not sell, rent, or trade visitor information to third parties. If you request a password reset (for site accounts), your IP address is included in the reset email, which is standard WordPress behavior.

How long we retain data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely, so follow-up comments from you can be recognized automatically rather than held for moderation each time.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments on this site, you can request an exported copy of the personal data we hold about you, and you can request that we erase it, except where we are required to keep it for administrative, legal, or security reasons.

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam-detection service.
